First Monday commute looms with I-394 lane closures

Lane closures on Interstate 394 in Minneapolis are about to see their first Monday commute. The Minnesota Department of Transportation closed westbound lanes of the interstate between I-94 and Highway 100 at 10 p.m. on Friday.

The closures first faced traffic in downtown Minneapolis for a Twins home game and the sold-out Basilica Block Party, followed by another Twins game on Sunday. MnDOT defended the 10 p.m. closure by saying its crews need to take advantage of every possible minute during the project window.

Lyndale Avenue over Dunwoody Boulevard will be closed through September, and traffic is being redirected to Dunwoody Boulevard, Hennepin Avenue, 12th Street and finally out through Linden Avenue.

394 closure details

Westbound lanes of Interstate 394 closed at 10 p.m. Friday, July 10 between I-94 and Highway 100. The westbound closure will last 2 weeks.

All westbound traffic from downtown Minneapolis will be directed onto the reversible MnPASS lanes.

The closure is needed to repair concrete in the general traffic lanes between Highway 100 and Interstate 94.

When the westbound repair work is complete, the eastbound lanes will close for 2 weeks, backing up inbound traffic and traffic using Lowry Tunnel to get from the west metro to I-94 and 35W.
