Speed limit up to 70 on I-94 between Woodbury, Wis. border

Starting Wednesday, drivers on Interstate 94 between the I-494-I-694 split in Woodbury and the Wisconsin-Minnesota border can drive up to 70 miles per hour instead of 65.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation will increase the speed limit on that 9 mile stretch of freeway to provide better traffic flow between Minnesota and Wisconsin. Wisconsin recently elected to increase the I-94 speed limit on its side of the St. Croix River, too.

A MnDOT study on I-94 that looked at past crash rates, current speeds and specs of the road deemed the stretch appropriate for a 70 mph speed limit.

"A speed study gives MnDOT the opportunity to review speed limits on specific sections freeway and identify whether it can support a higher speed limit without compromising safety," said Lars Impola, District Traffic Safety Engineer.
