Harrison Smith signs 5-year, $51.25M extension with Vikings

- After signing a five-year contract extension on Monday, safety Harrison Smith will continue to play a key role in the Minnesota Vikings’ defense.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported the first-time Pro Bowler’s deal covers five years for $51.25 million with a $10 million signing bonus, making him the highest-paid safety in the league. Smith was a first-round pick, so the Vikings were able to exercise a fifth-year option.

Last season, he had 47 tackles and two interceptions. Over the last two seasons, he tallied eight picks.

Smith's 2012 NFL Draft classmates Jarius Wright, Rhett Ellison, Blair Walsh and Audie Cole have all been re-signed by the club.
