U.S. Pond Hockey Championships on Nokomis pushed back 2 weeks

Due to unseasonably warm temperatures, the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships slated to take place on Lake Nokomis have been pushed back two weeks.

The Championships will now take place on Jan. 28 through 31.

“Our goal is to provide the absolute best pond hockey tournament in the world. We believe that by moving the date, we will be able to accomplish this,” spokesman Carson Kipfer said in an email.

Officials have been monitoring the ice conditions on Nokomis for the past month and do not believe there will be enough ice to safely hold the event on its original date, Jan. 14.

“While Minnesota weather can drastically change and deviate from forecasts, we are making the decision now so that everyone will have as much time as possible to make alternative arrangements to their travel plans,” Kipfer added.
