Twins power hitter Miguel Sano takes 2nd in Home Run Derby

Minnesota Twins’ power-hitting third baseman Miguel Sano had a big night Monday, coming in second in the Home Run Derby.

Sano was trying to become just the second Twin ever to win the title, but he came up slightly short against Yankees’ rookie Aaron Judge. Justin Morneau won the first title for the Twins in 208.

In the opening round, Sano went up against Mike Moustakas of the Kansas City Royals. Sano pounded out 11 homeruns, his farthest traveling 470 feet. In the second round, he knocked out Gary Sanchez.
But in the finals, Sano tired and his pitcher, Fernando Tatis, started missing. Sano only hit 10 and Judge easily surpassed that total, hitting 11 home runs with two minutes still left on the clock.

Judge dominated the event and was declared the winner of this year’s Home Run Derby, the first rookie ever to win the event. His longest hit measured 513 feet.

Next up for Sano is the MLB All-Star Game, which he’ll play in along with fellow Twins players Ervin Santana and Brandon Kintzler. They are the Twins first trio of all-stars since Morneau, Joe Mauer and Joe Nathan earned a trip to the Midsummer Classic in 2009.

The All-Star Game will be played Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Miami.
