MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Zach LaVine has been named the winner of the NBA Cares Community Assist Award for the month of April. Winners of the award can name a charity of their choice to receive a $10,000 contribution, and LaVine has chosen the Flip Saunders Legacy Fund.
LaVine was recognized for the Community Assist Award for his work with the Metro Deaf School. This year, LaVine donated $10,000 to help create a functioning kitchen. Before receiving the donated kitchen the school had to cater its meals.
“We are extremely grateful to Zach for this kind and generous donation,” said Debbie Saunders. “The thoughtfulness of Zach, his teammates, and the Timberwolves organization is really appreciated. It’s humbling to know that Zach has offered this to the Fund in Flip’s honor.”
As a monthly winner, LaVine becomes a top 10 finalist for the NBA Cares Community Assist Seasonlong Award. The winner of the Seasonlong Award will receive $25,000 to give to the charity of their choice. Fan voting will run from Monday, May 9 through Wednesday, May 18. Fans can vote for Zach using Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. For Twitter, use the hashtag #NBACommunityAssist and #ZachLaVine in a tweet, or retweet a post with both hashtags included. On Facebook, a comment on an official league or team’s post using both hashtags will count and for Instagram, users must share a unique post that contains both hashtags.
The Flip Saunders Legacy Fund was established to aid and support deserving individuals or groups to continue the positive impact of the life of Flip Saunders.
