Wolves keep No. 5 pick in NBA Draft

- In a rather uneventful NBA Draft Lottery night, the Minnesota Timberwolves held their original position and will have the fifth overall pick in this year’s draft on June 23.

This is the 20th time the Wolves have been in the lottery and fifth time they’ll pick at No. 5. Their last picks at that slot have been Isaiah Rider in 1993, Kevin Garnett in 1995, Ray Allen in 1996 and Ricky Rubio in 2009.

The Wolves could choose to trade their pick for a veteran player, but at No. 5, Kentucky guard Jamal Murray, Oklahoma guard Buddy Hield, Providence guard Kris Dunn, Croatian forward Dragan Bender and Cal forward Jaylen Brown might be available.

Wolves entered the lottery with a 26.15 percent chance of earning the fifth overall pick. The Philadelphia 76ers won the No. 1 pick, followed by the Los Angeles Lakers at No. 2 and the Boston Celtics will select third.

Here’s a list of notable NBA players who have also been selected at that spot:

Charles Barkley (1984)
Scottie Pippen (1987)
Mitch Richmond (1988)
Kevin Garnett (1995)
Ray Allen (1996)
Vince Carter (1998)
Dwyane Wade (2003)
DeMarcus Cousins (2010)
