Hopes of a second straight title are high on Lynx Media Day

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - The lights flashed and the cameras rolled on an action-filled Lynx media on Monday morning.

Media days are usually a joyous time, but that will soon turn into fun and games as Minnesota enters the 2016 season to pursue a second straight WNBA championship.

“Last year was great, but it still felt unfinished as far as that we can be even better,” Lynx guard Maya Moore said. “I’m very excited to step into a very exciting team. We’re an exciting and enthusiastic team and so people buy into that very quickly.”

The Lynx are not relying on their past successes for another championship. However, their attitude of expecting excellence remains the same.

"A lot of teams every training camp talk about winning a championship, every training camp they probably talk about the same things we talk about,” Lynx guard Renee Montgomery said. “The only difference is that Minnesota has done it and proven it, so that standard is realistic.”

The new pieces, from rookies to acquired veterans, are already fitting into that winning puzzle after only a week of training camp. 

“I’ve been a witness from the other end of having to play against them in the last 10 or 11 years,” Perkins said. “You just have to buy into this team. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”

The Lynx have three WNBA titles in five seasons but none of those championships have ever come consecutively. Changing that history is what this team is thinking about on this season’s road to repeating.

“This group deserves to have on their resume and their legacies that they were repeat champions,” Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve said. “It’s something that we are going to go after with everything we have.”

The Lynx start their preseason schedule of games on Thursday, May 5 in New York against the Liberty.
