99th birthday celebrated with the golf outing of a lifetime

- Playing golf has become a Friday routine for Bill Doi, but a round of 18 on his 99th birthday was the outing of a lifetime.

"It's still nice that I can get out and enjoy this,” Doi said. “I enjoy it very much."

Playing alongside Bill in the honored group on Friday were two additional generations of the Doi family who flew in from Oregon and Washington, D.C.

"It's a thrill, not only because I get to celebrate my dad's 99th birthday, but I can also play with my son,” Bill's son, Dave Doi said. “All 3 of us makes it an exceptional day."

The last member of the foursome was Bill’s playing partner of almost 15 years – his dentist.

"We started out playing once a year, but we've played consistently every other week for the last few years,” said Dr. Tamara Simons. "You see people who are 60, that are hobbling and he's playing golf He does 60 pushups a day, 60 sit ups a day -- he always brings this secret water jug with him. Ancient Japanese secret!"

But Bill's impact on those around him goes far beyond the game he's grown to love.

"I'm not a very emotional person, but I'm very emotional today,” Dr. Simons said. “He's an amazing man. We should all follow his lifestyle."

Bill said that for his 100th birthday next year, there's no special course he wants to play, but his son Dave says there might be an addition to the birthday celebration -- Bill wants to attend a Vikings game at the new U.S. Bank Stadium.
