Univ. of Minn. student won't let assault stop her from graduating
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - A University of Minnesota student was assaulted by two men on her way home from campus on Sept. 28, but despite suffering a fractured rib and a gunshot wound to the stomach, she is still determined to graduate in December.
Abigail Floy, 24, was walking along the 3100 block of Irving Avenue N. when Minneapolis police say she was robbed at gunpoint. One of the men took her iPhone and when she found back to keep her school books, she was shot in the back.
Floy is a senior and a member of the Feminist Ambassador Brigade at the U. Staff at the University of Minnesota Women’s Center where she worked say they have felt the impact of not having Floy in the office for the last week and a half. They are offering love, support and hope for her speedy recovery.
“The way that Abigail has touched so many fellow students, staff and faculty, so many people are just so shocked and hurt by what happened,” Bronwyn Miller, the U of M Women’s Center program coordinator, told Fox 9.
Floy was initially transported to North Memorial Hospital. Where, according to her family, she was profiled. On their GoFundMe page, the family wrote that Floy could not walk or talk. Yet, the staff at the hospital attempted to discharge her less than 24 hours after being shot. North Memorial officials say they take these claims seriously and indicate a grievance has yet to be filed.
Floy’s friends are now circulating a GoFundMe page to help pay for her medical and legal expenses.
“Anything at this time just to give Abigail to send the message that we’re all thinking such positive thoughts - send those in Abigail’s direction,” Luna, Floy’s friend and a fellow U of M student, said.
Despite the injury, Floy continues to study and refuses to let the assailants rob her of her goal of earning her degree in December.
Floy is now waiting for surgery to have the bullet lodged in her abdomen removed.
Minneapolis police are investigating attack. No suspects are in custody.
