Kissimmee police officer fatally shot, another 'gravely' injured

UPDATE: 

We now have photos of the two officers who were shot during an investigation into drug activity Friday evening. 

Officer Matthew Baxter, pictured with a group of children during a 7-11 promotional event, died from his injuries.

Sgt. Sam Howard, shown in a Facebook post, is in the hospital in critical condition.

A press conference is expected at 9am with further updates from Kissimmee Police Chief Jeff O'Dell.

 

Two Kissimmee Police Department officers were shot, one fatally, Friday evening. 

The Chief of the Kissimmee Police Department said Officer Matthew Baxter, a 3-year veteran of the department, was shot and killed Friday.

Sergeant Sam Howard, a 10-year veteran of the department, was shot and was "gravely" injured.

It all started when the two went to check a call about a suspicious person in the area of Palmway Street and Cypress Street at 9:27 p.m. Friday. At 9:32, a call came in that the officers had been shot, the chief of police said.

Responding officers found the two injured officers in the roadway and called for more help. 

Since the shooting, three suspects were brought into police custody and were being interviewed. Another suspect was still being sought by officers. 

Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs called the shooting death of a Kissimmee Police Department officer a "heartbreaking loss" Friday evening. 

News also began to come in just before midnight Saturday that two officers were also shot in Jacksonville

Governor Rick Scott sent his condolences Friday evening.
