Despite blizzard, Trout Fishing Opener kicks off in Minnesota

- Saturday marked the Trout Fishing Opener for Minnesota.

Despite several inches of snow and strong winds, people still headed to their local lakes and streams, hoping to bag a fish.

Many anglers said the wintry weather affected them a lot more than the trout.

“The water itself is actually warmer than the air right now, probably 45 degrees or so in the water because it’s spring fed,” said Kevin Wier with Trout Unlimited. “The wind makes it a little tough with the casting but the fish are happy—they’re underwater. They’re doing better than you and I are.

Trout season runs through September 14 for the entire state and until September 30 for some parts of the state.
