TOP TEACHER: Laurie McCormick of Sacred Heart Catholic School honored

- Fox 9 awarded another Minnesota educator with its Top Teacher honor.

This time, the prize went to fifth grade teacher Laurie McCormick of Sacred Heart Catholic School in Robbinsdale.

Sarah Svien, McCormick's co-worker and also a parent of one her students, nominated McCormick for the recognition.

McCormick makes videos of her math lessons after school and has her students watch them at home. The next day she quizzes the students on the video and then they all work on the homework in class.

Svien called McCormick a "one of a kind teacher" who helps her students learn beyond the classroom. To encourage students to have strong relationships with the community, McCormick started a program called Grand Friends, which partners students with senior citizens. During Lent, she also has the fifth graders volunteer for the school's fish fry dinner.

As a Fox 9 Top Teacher, McCormick will receive $900 from Royal Credit Union for classroom supplies, a Subway sandwich party for 50 friends, and a Top Teacher award.
