Terror group Al-Shabaab releases recruiting video highlighting Donald Trump, Minnesota

(KMSP) - The terror group al-Shabaab began the New Year by releasing a new recruitment video highlighting both Minnesota and Donald Trump.

The video runs over 50 minutes long featuring many things we've seen before; guns, stage craft and promises of terror. But now, there is a new theme.

Al-Shabaab is now turning to American history to attract recruits.

"Yesterday America was a land of slavery, segregation, lynching and Klu Klux Klan and tomorrow a land of religious discrimination and concentration camps,” members of the group said in the video.

Twelve minutes into the video, the terror group makes it clear Minnesota is part of their propaganda plan, highlighting Minnesota men who have left to fight overseas calling them the "Minnesota martyrs.”

"They really don't care about the lives of or future of these young people or the problems they create and fear and agony in the hearts of our community,” Abdi Bihi, a Somali community leader in Minnesota, said. “All they care is to use anything to terrorize innocent people.”

Bihi condemned the video, calling it an act of desperation.

Aside from twisting historical events, the video also shows a recent clip of Donald Trump calling for a ban on Muslims entering the U.S.

The objective of the entire video, bidi believes is simple -- create fear.

"They are hoping there can be a backlash against young people in the community and that will create more angry people. That's what they are trying strategically to go after" Bihi said.

Omar Jamal, with the Somali Human Rights Commission, worries the nearly hour-long video is al-Shabaab's best work yet.

“People like to assume they don’t know what they are doing, but they are on top of this game. And I have not yet seen any counter narrative to their story," Jamal told Fox 9.
