Teen drowns in Kettle River in Pine County, Minn.

- A teenager drowned while attempting to swim across the Kettle River at Banning State Park on Wednesday. According to the Pine County sheriff’s office, three teens were swimming across the river at about 4:30 p.m. when one began to struggle.

The other two teens swam out to assist but were unable to help. The teens reported seeing the third teen go underwater and not come back up. The area of the river where the incident occurred is inaccessible by boat.

A ground search along the shore was assisted by an air search from the Minnesota State Patrol helicopter. The St. Louis County Rescue Squad was called in from Duluth, and the teen’s body was recovered from the river just before 11 p.m. Wednesday.
