No charges yet for suspect in UW-Stout deadly assault

MENOMONIE, Wis. (KMSP) - Representatives from the Dunn County Attorney’s Office are still determining whether to charge a suspect in the deadly assault of 24-year-old University of Wisconsin-Stout student Hussain Saeed Alnahdi. If the suspect is charged, a warrant will be issued for his arrest.

The suspect has not yet been placed in police custody because police do not believe he is a threat to the public. Police say they have no evidence indicating the assault was racially motivated and are withholding the suspect’s name pending charges.

The Dunn County Attorney's Office said they will issue a press release once a charging decision has been made. If he is charged, Menomonie police reportedly recommend the suspect be charged with felony assault and felony battery.

UW-Stout students walking on campus Monday said they remain stunned.

“I didn’t think that kind of stuff happened at [UW] Stout,” freshman Mallory Brask said.

Brask insists few students were immune to the news Alnahdi died from his injuries after he was beaten on Oct. 30. The attack happened on the 400 block of Main Street just after 2 a.m. right outside of Topper’s Pizza.

“It came as a shock for everyone, and it’s such a small campus that when it happened, that was the only thing people were talking about on campus because it’s just not who we are and we’re so much more of a positive community than that and it hurt everyone when it happened,” recounted Brask.

Alnahdi is originally from Saudi Arabia and studied business administration at Stout.

“When that tragedy hit it was like, ‘woah!’ A moment of silence,” freshman Agod Gucci said.

“We hope it’s not hate crime,” fellow international freshman Emad Alsayday, also from Saudi Arabia, said.

Alsayday maintains his experience at Stout has been nothing but positive.

“Here? It’s small town… I feel safe here,” Alsayday nodded.

Alnahdi’s case is now in the hands of the Dunn County District Attorney.

“This guy died. That was his life,” Gucci said, compelled to issue what he believes is a necessary reminder.
Menomonie police continue to investigate and seek additional information related to Alnahdi’s death.

After losing a fellow student, Gucci has one hope.

“If you [saw] something, just please tell,” he urged his fellow students and community members.
