Stargate Nightclub security guard shoots, kills 1 of 6 attackers

An armed security guard shot and killed one of 6 men who attacked him outside of the Stargate Nightclub in Maplewood, Minn. The victim of the shooting was identified Friday afternoon as 20-year-old Chou Tony Yang of St Paul, Minn.

The shooting was reported at 12:53 a.m. Friday in the parking lot of the nightclub at 1700 Rice Street. Video evidence and witness statements indicate the security guard was chased by the shooting victim and at least 5 other men from the entrance of the nightclub. After running out into the parking lot, the guard fell to the ground and was swarmed and assaulted.

The security guard fired his gun, striking a 20-year-old man from St. Paul. The shooting victim was taken to Regions Hospital in critical condition, and later died at the hospital.

Preliminary indication is the shooting victim had been asked to leave the nightclub shortly before the incident.

The security officer, an employee of JBM Patrol and Protection Services, has been fully cooperative with Maplewood police and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Statement from JBM Patrol and Protection Corp.

All of us at JBM Patrol & Protection Corporation are saddened by the incident at the Stargate Nightclub in Maplewood early this morning. We are committed to cooperating fully with the Maplewood Police Department and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

The 28-year-old officer who was attacked joined JBM in 2012. He has been released from the hospital and is recovering. In the past 3 years, the officer has received extensive tactical, firearms and use-of-force training and has an exemplary employment record. While this morning's incident is a tragedy, our officer followed the proper procedure when his own life was threatened.

JBM Patrol has been providing armed protective and patrol services since 1990. We employ more than 300 security guards across the Midwest, some armed, and this is the first time in 25 years that a JBM officer has discharged a weapon on duty.
