St. Paul man charged with breaking into woman's apartment, drinking beer

- A St. Paul man has been charged after police say he broke into a woman’s Lowertown apartment on Tuesday.

George Lowe, 45, of St. Paul was charged Wednesday with first-degree aggravated robbery, kidnapping and two counts of first-degree burglary.

The incident happened on the 100 block of 6th Street East.

According to the criminal complaint, a neighbor first noticed Lowe around 2 a.m. rattling the lock on a door. Around 6:30 a.m., she woke up and heard more rattling and decided to call police. Not too long after, she heard a woman screaming for help from the hallway.

The victim woke up around 7:30 a.m. and heard someone trying to get into her apartment door. She told him, “You have the wrong apartment. You don’t live here.” The woman then went into her bedroom and called her mother, who told her to call police. When she hung up, she heard the sound of a can opening in her kitchen. She walked out of her bedroom and saw Lowe sitting on her couch, drinking a beer, and searching through her roommate’s purse. She tried to run out the door, but Lowe ran after her and grabbed her by the back of the neck, grabbed her cell phone and told her to “shut the f--- up.”

The woman asked Lowe what he wanted, and he said “money and gems.” She gave him $40 and then tried to run out the door again. He grabbed her around her body and dragged her to the couch and forced her to sit with him.

Once officers arrived, they found Lowe sitting on the couch, smoking a cigarette and drinking a beer. The woman was visibly shaken up and told the officers she didn’t know Lowe.

When Lowe was interviewed by police, he told them he was let into the apartment by his girlfriend “Mary.” He told police he would never hurt her and said, “I told her I loved her and then there was a knock on the door.” He was asked what would happen if police had not arrived and he said, "I was going to finish drinking my beer and we probably would have made love."

St. Paul police have had several encounters with Lowe this month, including an incident where he was yelling at a stranger, “I’m going to f--- you!” On a different occasion, Lowe spit in the face of another woman who was a stranger.

If convicted, Lowe faces up to 20 years in prison and up to $35,000 in fines on each charge.
