St. Paul could expand Grand Old Day to two-day event

- Changes could be in store for one of St. Paul’s biggest events, Grand Old Day, as some in the city look to expand the one-day event to a full weekend of activities.

It was an idea hatched out of sheer success – if several hundred thousand come to Grand Avenue for a one day event, why not make it two days and let those who set up the tents and the stages get more bang for their buck?

But expanding Grand Old Day to two days isn’t just more of the same; it would actually be the opposite.

There would be no street closures or vendors, but instead it would be something catered more to smaller businesses who may get overlooked during Sunday’s street party.

But the Summit Hill Neighborhood Association isn't ready to sign off on it. They are going to have a scheduled community hearing about expanding the event.

Some worry it could be another day of parking problems and partying, according to John Perrone of the Grand Avenue Business Association.

“Yeah, they’re taking a lot of feedback and getting a pulse of the neighborhood and see what’s good for everybody,” Perrone said.
