St. Paul barbershop, grocery store to be demolished after fire

St. Paul Fire Department investigators have determined a building damaged by a fire overnight Saturday will have to be knocked down. The building housed a barbershop, grocery store and several apartments.

On Saturday at 9:37 p.m., firefighters responded to a fire at Selby Avenue and St. Albans Avenue. The two businesses, Clean Cuts and Ave. Grocery, were closed at the time and the apartments above were empty.

It took fire crews more than five hours to extinguish the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

On Monday, officials determined the entire structure was severely compromised and unsafe for reentry. The fire department plans to raze the building Monday afternoon.
