Skateboarder killed at intersection of Grand and Fairview in St. Paul

A skateboarder was killed Tuesday night when he rolled out of an alley and into the path of a pickup truck at a busy St. Paul intersection. The accident happened just before 9 p.m. at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Fairview Avenue.

Soren Hallberg, 35, was just 2 blocks from home at the time of the deadly accident. St. Paul police said he was wearing earbuds at the time, but there's no way to tell if that was a contributing factor. There's also no way to tell if he tried to stop, or simply didn't see the truck.

Police said Hallberg was not wearing a helmet, and his fatal injury was a result of hitting his head. The pickup driver was not speeding and was not impaired, and he immediately stopped to help the skateboarder after the accident.

Grand and Fairview sits midway between the University St. Thomas and Macalester College campuses. The intersection is home to several shops and restaurants, as well as a Whole Foods grocery store.
