SCAM WARNING: Don't fall victim to 'grandparent, IRS' scams

The Washington County Sheriff's Office is alerting citizens to a pair of repeat scam calls – don’t fall victim to these:

Grandparent scam

Victims have received calls from someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer and informed a grandchild is in jail and needs money immediately for court or bail. They direct the victim to get cash, money orders or gift cards for payment.

“Law Enforcement does not ask for money EVER over the phone. If you receive one of these calls hang up and block the number if you are able,” officials said.

IRS scam

Victims receive a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and will be told that there is a warrant for their arrest and that the need to get cash, money orders, gift cards for payment to prevent their arrest.

“The IRS will not call you in this manner or demand cash to prevent your arrest. If you receive one of these calls hang up and block the number if you are able,” officials said.
