Procession brings Rusk County, Wisconsin Deputy Dan Glaze back home

Rusk County Sheriff's Deputy Dan Glaze, 33, was checking on a suspicious vehicle when he was shot and killed by the suspect.

LADYSMITH, Wis. (KMSP) - Monday, at an undetermined time, a procession will take place to bring Rusk County, Wisconsin Deputy Dan Glaze back home. The procession will run north on Highway 27 from the Chippewa/Rusk County line, and then west on Highway 8 into Barron County.

Deputy Glaze, 33, was shot and killed Saturday night near Ladysmith, Wisconsin while checking on a suspicious vehicle. Glaze radioed in that he had located the vehicle in a field near Broken Arrow Road, east of Highway 27, around 10:55 p.m. Saturday. Dispatch lost contact and backup deputies arrived minutes later to discover Deputy Glaze had been shot and killed.

The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Doug Nitek, was located and arrested Sunday morning. Officers deployed the Eau Claire County Regional Robot to search a residence at the scene of the incident. According to the Rusk County sheriff’s office, deputies were fired upon once before Nitek surrendered.

Dan Glaze was a seven-year veteran in law enforcement and had been working with the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office for the last one and a half years.

“Please keep the family of the fallen officer and the men and women of the Rusk County Sheriff’s Department in your prayers,” Rusk County Sheriff Jeff Wallace said in a statement.

Memorial fund

A memorial fund has been established for Deputy Glaze. Donations can be brought to Ladysmith Federal or mailed to PO Box 146, Ladysmith, WI 54848.

Candlelight vigil

There will be a candlelight vigil in honor of Deputy Glaze and for all his fellow law enforcement officers and staff at Memorial Park in Ladysmith on Friday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. The community is invited to participate in showing their support for law enforcement as they grieve the loss of Deputy Glaze. The gathering will include prayers and presentations from the Rusk County Law Enforcement Chaplain Program. Candles will be provided by the local faith communities, hot beverages will be available through the local community service organizations and there will be an opportunity to donate in supporting the Glaze family.
