Rod Carew undergoes successful heart and kidney transplant surgery

The Minnesota Twins announced Rod Carew had a successful heart and kidney transplant surgery.  The surgery took 13 hours and Carew is expected to make a fully recovery.

The entire Minnesota Twins family is happy to report that Rod Carew had a successful heart and kidney transplant surgery today at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and is expected to make a full recovery.  After a 13-hour procedure that started shortly after midnight Pacific time, Rod is resting in recovery. We ask that all of Twins Territory and the entire baseball community keep Rod, his wife Rhonda, and the entire Carew family in your thoughts and prayers as Rod recovers.”

The American Heart Association announced Carew was being prepared Thursday morning to receive a new heart to replace the machine that’s kept him alive since he nearly died following a heart attack and cardiac arrest 15 months ago.  

Carew and his wife Rhonda, create the “Heart of 29” campaign which raises funds for the American Heart Association and awareness for heart disease and heart failure.
