WOODBURY, Minn. (KMSP) - A rescue dog from a local animal shelter became the new drug detection K9 for the Washington County Sheriff’s office Monday.
The sheriff’s office spent two months searching through local shelters before finding Captain Kirk, a one-year-old bulldog-lab mix at the Animal Humane Society. He adopted in June and learned narcotics detection quickly, the sheriff’s office said.
Captain Kirk received his deputy sheriff’s badge at a graduation ceremony on Monday. The sheriff’s office hopes their adoption inspires other law enforcement departments to consider adopting rescue dogs to become K9 officers as well.
October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.
