Pine City man dies after being caught in avalanche in Montana

Authorities in Montana confirm a Minnesota man was killed following an avalanche Tuesday.

The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Weylon Wiedemann, 40, of Pine City died after being caught in an avalanche while snowmobiling about 19 miles north of West Yellowstone. The mountains in the area received two to four feet of snow late last week.

Just before 5 p.m. Tuesday Gallatin County received a report of an injured person.

A helicopter from Air Idaho was immediately dispatched to search for Wiedemann. Once he was located, Air Idaho asked for some of the people on scene to help clear a possible landing zone. The helicopter was in the air for about 30 minutes before the crew was able to lend aid.

Revival attempts were unsuccessful and Wiedemann was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Coroner and the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center are investigating the incident.
