One dead following officer-involved shooting in Bemidji, Minn.

One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Bemidji, Minnesota Wednesday evening. 

According to Bemidji police. officers pulled someone over for a traffic stop shortly before 11 p.m. During the stop it was discovered a passenger in the back seat had a felony warrant out for their arrest. Police then called the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Department to assist.

When a sheriff’s deputy arrived on scene, the passenger exited the vehicle. Both the police officer and the deputy noticed the passenger was in possession of a handgun.

It was at that time police said the officer and the passenger began to struggle for control of the gun. Both the deputy and the officer fired their service weapons and the striking the passenger,

Emergency medical personnel arrived on scene and declared the passenger dead. No one else was injured. 

Bemidji police say the officer was wearing a body camera. The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave as is protocol in an officer-involved shooting. 

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting an investigation.
