Officer, suspect injured after shooting at Minneapolis airport

A man shot by police Saturday night at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is out of the hospital and in police custody on pending charges of aggravated assault.

At about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, MSP Airport police responded to a report of "suspicious persons" at the Terminal 1 rental car ramp. While they investigated the scene, a vehicle driven by 36-year-old Abdul Kadir Sheikh Mahmoud intentionally drove at the officers who were on-foot, Hennepin County sheriff's officials said.

Officers fired at the vehicle and Mahmoud was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds. One officer was also transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

At a Sunday news conference, police said the threat was isolated and connected to an investigation into a recent rash of car thefts at the airport. The threat had no ties to homeland security.

Traffic near the airport entrance at 4650 Glumack Drive was delayed just before midnight, but officials said traffic was clear by Sunday morning for incoming and outgoing travelers.
