Officer shot in leg, suspect killed in Hutchinson, Minn.

Hutchinson Police Department has confirmed that one person is dead after an officer-involved shooting Sunday evening. Officers were called to the 500 block of Harmony Lane on a report of a verbal disturbance around 4:15 p.m.

Upon arrival, some sort of struggle ensued between the officer and suspect. As a result, the officer was shot in the leg and airlifted to HCMC where he's being treated for non-life threatening injuries, police confirmed. The suspect was pronounced dead on scene.

Police say the suspect, is 49-year-old Luverne Christensen.

The name of the officer hasn't been released yet, but police confirm he is out of the hospital.

“Some officers will be put on administrative paid leave for their well-being, which is standard procedure," the police department said at a press conference.

The department said the last time a Hutchinson police officer was shot was in December of 1989.

No further details have been given at this time. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting an investigation.
