(KMSP) - A man has died after diving at the Madeira Shipwreck site on Lake Superior Saturday afternoon.
Shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday, the Lake County sheriff's office received a call about a driver in distress within the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. When deputies and ambulance arrived, they found 42-year-old Aaron Timmerman of New Hope, Minn. unresponsive.
He was transported to Gooseberry Falls State Park where Two Harbors Fire department maintained a landing site for the medical helicopter. Upon examination and consultation with ER doctors, Timmerman was pronounced dead.
Timmerman was diving with a group on the Madeira Shipwreck when witnesses saw him surface and call for help, but no one was able to get to him before he went under. Members of his group later located him at the bottom of the lake.
The incident is still under investigation, and the cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.
