Mourning, questions follow 3-year-old's drowning

Authorities found a 3-year-old girl, Corrianah Wright, at the bottom of a pool at Brooklyn Park apartment complex early Monday morning. What remains unclear is how she got there.

Corrianah's 15-year-old brother was supposed to be watching her on Sunday night. Since his sister's death, he's not doing well. But his mother, Mykeisha Wright, wants to make sure he knows it's not his fault.

On the night of the incident he went with Corrianah and several other younger siblings to go swimming at the apartment complex just minutes from their house, where there was no lifeguard on duty.

Corrianah's mom confirmed she walked over to check on them before returning home to make dinner.

"You know it just hurted me for people to even say that I didn't, I went to check on my kids. I wasn't just going to leave them and stuff, I'm not a bad mother at all," she said.

At about 8 p.m., the kids returned home, that's when they realized Corrianah was missing. They frantically searched the neighborhood before calling 911. Authorities eventually found Corrianah hours later, and said they didn't initially see her in the pool because of murky water conditions.

On Wednesday, flanked by family and friends, Wright said she misses the little things about her 3-year-old daughter, "Every morning she'd wake up and say 'mommy I want some cereal.' You know, and... sigh."

Wright also has many regrets -- "I just feel so bad, I just wish that I would not have even let them went swimming that day."

She is now preparing for her daughter's funeral.

"It's just unreal, I feel like it's a dream. I didn't think that I would ever be going through something like this," Wright said.

Case workers with Hennepin County Child Protective Services continue to visit the home regularly after Wright's one-year-old son was found with unexplained bruises during a doctor's visit last fall.  She said she's never abused her children. For now, the pool remains closed, as the city tries to determine why the water was murky.
