Minnesotans come together to show appreciation for police officers

- Working the beat in the blistering heat isn’t for anyone with a heat index of 115 degrees, police officers are no different.

“Once you sweat at the beginning of the day you never really stop,” said Inspector of the Minneapolis Second Police Precinct Katherine Waite

A group from White Bear Lake decided to put their show of appreciation into action during these hot temperatures. Just a week ago, local cheerleaders put a post on social media. Since then, 70 families responded to add to the pile of donations including bottled water, Gatorade, and snacks.

“We all have been raised where we appreciate officers and the work that they do,” said White Bear Lake Cheerleader Baily Sherrick.  “We just want to recognize all they do and what better way than to give them some water on a hot day and give them some food.”

While in recent weeks attacks on law enforcement in Dallas and Baton Rouge have added to an uneasy climate for officers, local departments have been receiving countless gifts, notes, and even ice cream.

“This is amazing. The amount of support the officers have felt in the past several weeks has been amazing,” said Inspector Waite.

On Wednesday, the group from White Bear Lake delivered cases of water and snack to officers in White Bear Lake, St. Paul, and to the Minnesota State Patrol. On Thursday, their focus was Minneapolis.

“We are visiting all give precincts tonight,” said Brian Sherrrick.  “We just want to show our appreciation for all the work you're doing and extra work and hours. “

With the scorching temperatures, officers plan to share the gifts, especially the water with others who need it. The Minneapolis Police department posted a video to it’s Facebook Page Thursday showing officers doing just that.

“Pay it forward and really take care of our citizens,” said Inspector Waite.  “It’s always nice to know you have support out in the community and that there is care and concern. Always makes your day brighter."
