Minnesota United plans to hold a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for its new Major League Soccer stadium in St. Paul.

Minnesota United owner Bill McGuire, Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman will attend the event.

The St. Paul City Council approved the site plan for the 20,000-seat stadium in August, just days before the announcement that the team would be moving up to the country’s highest tier professional league.

The $150 million stadium, located at Snelling Avenue and St. Anthony Avenue, is expected to be completed in 2018. It will seat 20,000 fans.

The team will kick off its inaugural MLS season in 2017 at the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium.

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Monday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. at 415 Pascal St. N.
