ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) - A St. Paul, Minn. woman published a couple cooking magazines created specifically for children. Jill Colella is the editor of Ingredient Magazine and Butternut Magazine for kids. She is the investor, the boss, and the staff.
Her office is in her St. Paul apartment, but the idea started as she stood in world-famous Julia Child's kitchen.
"She revolutionized cooking in America, made it accessible and made it ok to fail,” Colella said.
So in 2010 when she lost her job due to recession cutbacks, she took her idea to print and decided, like Julia Child, not to be afraid to fail. There are lots of recipes and stories for kids that are about kids -- like how to share food with friends and give back with food for the holidays.
"We really look at food through multiple lenses answer how and why we eat what we eat,” Colella said.
There are also fun facts like what food is celebrated on each and every day of the year.
"Not all the content has something you make or do -- sometimes it's like the history of the Popsicle and it's a really interesting story.”
She has about 3,000 subscribers to Ingredient Magazine, for kids six and up. Butternut Magazine, for kids ages three to six, is still new and has about 300 subscribers so far.
