Sister comes home from boot camp to surprise siblings for the holidays

On the last day of school before winter break, when all the students are ready for a vacation, students at the Academy of Holy Angels crowd into the school gymnasium for a bit of festive fun. But this year, the holiday sing-along served a dual purpose.

Emma Zabiniski just returned from Norfolk, Va. after completing boot camp for the United States Navy. She surprised her younger brother and sister, who had no idea she was home, at the school assembly.

It has been a long time since their entire family, including all six kids, has spent a holiday together. Their older brother, who helped arrange the surprise, recently completed four years with the air force, so they've all had to get used to celebrating apart.

This week together is precious for many reasons. Zabiniski will be deployed at the beginning of 2016, so reuniting for Christmas is extra special.

“It means a lot, knowing I’ll be able to see them for one holiday before I deploy,” Zabiniski said.
