Polo Classic raises big money, but needs charities to take it

For 26 years, the Polo Classic in the Minneapolis area has been a hit. There’s plenty of people, plenty of polo and plenty of fancy hats. But the event has a problem: It has money to give, but needs charities to take it.

"The money, we'd prefer to stay local,” said Polo for Philanthropy founder Craig Robbins. “The polo we play is local and if we could help local charities, that's what makes us feel best."

This year, Polo for Philanthropy is hoping to raise about $200,000 total with three events, including a new Kentucky Derby Day at Nicollet Island Pavilion.

"We are expecting more than 1,000 at each event, and the Classic could get as many as 3,500,” Robbins said.

In the past, beneficiaries have included Children's Hospital, the Equine Center and cancer research. They hope potential partners will apply soon and provide volunteers to help with their events.

"It's helped to support charities and polo organizations in the cities,” Robbins said. “We'll bring in teams from around the Midwest and they bring interesting international players and we get a chance to meet them."
