Minneapolis residents weigh in on Arradondo as next police chief

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Minneapolis residents weighed in on the city’s next chief of police at a public hearing Tuesday afternoon.

Mayor Betsy Hodges asked Chief Janee Harteau to step down in the wake of the fatal officer-involved shooting of Justine Damond. Assistant Police Chief Medaria Arradondo was named acting chief two weeks ago.

As acting chief, Arradondo, a 28-year veteran of the force, has already announced a new body camera policy requiring officers to have them turned on whenever they responded to a call or take action on their own. Many residents were upset that the officers’ body cameras were not turned when Damond was shot.

The mayor has nominated Arradondo to permanently assume the position of chief of police. If approved, one of his biggest jobs will be focusing on ways to rebuild trust with the community.

After Tuesday's public hearing, the Public Safety Committee approved Arradondo's nomination. The full city council will vote on Aug. 18.
