MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - One person is dead and two others are injured after separate shootings over the weekend in North Minneapolis, police confirmed.
Deadly shooting Saturday
Minneapolis police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened on Saturday afternoon near the intersection of 39th Street and Colfax Avenue North.
The victim was walking by the intersection around 12 p.m. when a white passenger vehicle pulled up beside him and fired several shots, according to Minneapolis police spokesperson John Elder.
The victim fled west from the scene and died shortly later in a nearby alley. The vehicle fled southbound on Colfax Avenue. No suspects are in custody at this time.
Florist Phillip Murphy said Saturday's murder happened five blocks from his shop -- "I have no reasonable expectation that I'll live through the year. Nobody should in North Minneapolis," he told Fox 9.
Double shooting Sunday
Police are also investigating a double shooting that happened Sunday at 34th and Fremont Avenue North around 12:30 a.m.
Law enforcement responded to reports of shots fired in the area, and two people showed up at North Memorial Medical Center with minor injuries. Police are still searching for suspects and investigating whether the shooting is linked to another crime.
Ward 4 councilwoman Barb Johnson told Fox 9 that gun crimes are on the rise in her area, adding more 9-1-1 calls are made in North Minneapolis than in any other part of the city.
"It's very personal for me," she said. "In the homicides last year, North Minneapolis had almost half of the homicides in the city of Minneapolis. And we're one-seventh of the city's population."
