Minneapolis daycare investigated by Human Services

A daycare in downtown Minneapolis was raided by state officials Wednesday morning. A Department of Human Services official said children were still inside the Salama Child Care Center at 1411 Nicollet Avenue S. when investigators began their search.

Families arriving at the daycare later in the day were turned away.

The Department of Human Services won't say why its agents were at the daycare, but this particular center has had violations with the state in the past. Those violations include not having enough supervision of educational aides and no proof of training on various issues.

Somali advocate Omar Jamal said he spoke with the owner, Fouzia Ahmed Alis, who told him DHS descended on the business Wednesday morning and started going through computers.

"We don't think this has anything to do with terrorism, probably allegation of fraud," Jamal said.

The Minneapolis Salama child care program is affiliated with a child care center with the same name in St. Cloud, which had its license revoked last June.
