Minn. authorities address clown rumors, latest social media craze

- The creepy clown scare has taken over social media and authorities in Minnesota are warning people of false reports.

The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office posted this message on their Facebook,

Despite social media claims and a lot of "middle school gossip" please be assured that Andover AND Anoka Schools are NOT on lockdown because of "creepy clowns" and we have had NO REPORTS of "creepy clowns" in the Andover and Anoka area. Any social media reports to the contrary are incorrect and any information being shared is speculative rumor that is completely false.

The Shakopee Police Department confirmed their incident was a joke by two Shakopee students making a Snapchat video,

We have received reports of a video circulating regarding a "creepy clown" chasing a vehicle. We have confirmed that this video was made by two Shakopee students and posted on Snapchat as a joke for Halloween season.

We are aware that there are several stories of clowns across the United States acting suspiciously and scaring community members. At this time, we have no legitimate reports of this happening in Shakopee, other than the video mentioned above.

If you see anyone acting suspicious (clown costume or not) please contact us immediately at 952-233-9400. We would also like to remind residents that making false reports is a crime.

Also, please remind your children of how quickly something can go viral in this day in age.

And… the city of Farmington has been in contact with “Bobo the Friendly Clown,”

Apparently Bobo the Friendly Clown has decided to come to Farmington.

Yesterday we were inundated with calls in reference to an individual who as identified himself as Bobo the Friendly Clown and has suggested he was spotted in Rambling River Park and will visit students at Dodge and Boeckman schools around lunchtime today.

The clown craze is the latest attempt at social media influenced hysteria. There have been several arrests around the country in recent days for making terroristic threats and disrupting public school functions. We have investigated the complaints and continue to do so finding no credible threat at this time.

Bobo, if you get this message, I offer the following. I’m sorry, but you are not welcome at any of the schools for a delicious nutritious lunch. You are however, more than welcome to have lunch with me and my officers. It won’t be as tasty and the conversation probably a little too mature for you; but I have a very scary jail cell I think you would appreciate seeing.

Looking forward to making your acquaintance,

Brian Lindquist
Chief of Police

Saint Paul Public Schools posted this on their Facebook,

We have received reports of several "creepy clown" messages on social media, as well as sightings of clowns in Saint Paul. Though these situations are believed to be hoaxes, please notify police if you see any unsafe or unusual activity.

School districts across the country are dealing with similar reports.

Additionally, our Department of Security and Emergency Management is monitoring reports and will work closely with Saint Paul Police to ensure safety of our students.

Please remind your children to never accept a friend request from an unknown person (or clown) on social media.

Hopkins Police arrested someone who was making threats online,

Kroacky Klown has been identified and charges will be pursued for their threats. There are no other threatening clowns in our community that we are aware of. Thank you for messages and calls.
