May 6th: 80 years since the Hindenburg's explosion

One of the most infamous disasters of the 20th century happened 80 years before Saturday.

On May 6, 1937 the Hindenburg burst into flames. The German airship exploded as it tried to dock in New Jersey.

Of the 97 people on board, 35 were killed along with someone on the ground assisting in docking.

The incident destroyed all public confidence in Zeppelin travel, bringing the era of airships to a sudden close.

To this day, the exact reason behind the Hindenburg explosion has not been determined.
