Man in critical condition after hit-and-run in Brooklyn Park

Witnesses say a dark colored sedan traveling southbound on County Road 81 struck a pedestrian at the intersection of County Road 81 and 71st Avenue North in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota on Monday night.

A man is in critical condition after a hit-and-run at the intersection of 71st Avenue North and County Road 81 in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota Tuesday night.

Shortly after 11:00 p.m., witnesses say a dark colored sedan traveling southbound on County Road 81 struck a pedestrian at the intersection and continued driving southbound on the road, away from the scene of the accident.

The victim, identified by family members as Seth Bennett, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he is in critical condition. His sister, Candie Nayes, told Fox 9 he has a severe brain injury, two broken legs, a broken shoulder blade and collar bone and a bruised lung.

It is “wait and see” at this point, Candie said.

Candie said it is not unusual for her brother to take walks in the neighborhood, but rarely that late at night. She said he was excited after they had taken him to vote earlier in the day, but his family had thought he was in bed because he had to be at work the next morning.

Seth works at Opportunity Partners in Minnetonka, a nonprofit that supports people with disabilities and helps them live more independently.

“Seth was just a good kid,” Candie said. “He didn’t deserve this.”

Brooklyn Park police are asking for the public’s help in the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run. The vehicle should have damage to the front end. Anyone with information is asked to call the Brooklyn Park Police Department at 763-493-8222.
