A man has been charged with murder and attempted murder after the shooting on at Dollar Tree in Burnsville, Minnesota Monday.

Grant Hendrickson, 27, of South St. Paul, was charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Donald Hortsch, 69, of Rosemount and the attempted shooting death of a 26-year-old man/

According to the criminal complaint, Burnsville police responded to a call shortly after noon at Dollar Tree. When they arrived, they discovered two people had been shot. One of the victims later died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Witnesses told officers that the shooter left the store in a beige car. Officers apprehended Hendrickson a short time later.

Hendrickson’s girlfriend told investigators that she went to the store after 10 a.m. where she and a man who works at the store had an argument about “his family being evicted from an apartment due to her complaining,” the complaint said.

During the argument, she discovered that Hendrickson was a sex offender, of which she was unaware. When Hendrickson called her shortly thereafter, she told him about the confrontation and that she learned he’s a sex offender.

Another witness told officers that as she was checking out, she heard a noise at the back of the store and saw a man leave and then re-enter the store firing a gun. She then heard “at least one more shot” as she left the store, according to the complaint.

After the witness saw the man exit the store, she followed the vehicle and saw the man throw what she believed to be a gun into a nearby dumpster area. Police later located a 9mm handgun in that area.

Hendrickson’s girlfriend told police that after the shooting, Hendrickson called her and admitted that he shot two people. He also told her that five people jumped him and that he “had no choice but to shoot,” according to the criminal complaint.

Hendrickson has been charged with second degree murder, first degree attempted murder, second degree attempted murder, first degree assault and illegal possession of firearm.

Hendrickson appeared in court on Wednesday, and his bail is set at $1.5 million without conditions.
