Mall of America celebrates its 25th birthday

The Mall of America celebrates its 25th anniversary on Friday. When MOA first opened in the 1990's many thought its size would be unsustainable.

"They've got something for everyone and they have kind of rolled with the punches and modified as times have changed," said Professor George John, University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management

Industry experts say MOA's success is unique in the industry. The fact that it has become a retail destination likely insuring it's place for years to come.

"25 years of having adapted to some of the biggest changes we've seen, I'd bet on them for another 25," said John.

The Mall of America will have a series of events going on at the mall throughout the day Friday to celebrate the big milestone.

A special cake made by Buddy Valastro from TLC’s “Cake Boss” will be on display in the mall’s rotunda. From noon to 2 p.m., guests who preregistered online will also attempt to set two Guinness World Records for “The World’s Largest Gathering of Birthday Hats” and “The Most Cupcakes Iced in One Hour.” At 4 p.m., Carlo’s Bakery will give out 2500 free cupcakes.
