MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - A man who stabbed two men in a dressing room area at the Macy’s inside the Mall of America will be spending 15 years behind bars.
Last month, Mahad Abdiaziz Abdiraham, 20, of Minneapolis pleaded guilty to two charges of first degree assault. Friday, a Hennepin County judge handed down the sentence. He received 103 months for the first charge and 84 months for the second charge. He will serve that time consecutively.
According to the charges, in November Abdiraham stabbed a 19-year-old man who had been trying on pants, cutting him across his face, arms and head. Others came to the 19-year-old’s aid. In the struggle, a 25-year-old man was also injured.
“Some people have suggested that he was doing it in the name of Allah,” said Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman. “Nobody should assault anyone in the name of any religious leader. People have a right to go shopping with their family and be safe.”
Also at the courthouse for the sentencing was Cynthia Leon, a relative of the victims, who had strong words for Abdiraham.
“When you’re brought to this country, you’re given a second chance, and you should appreciate it,” said Cynthia Leon, a victim’s aunt. “You’re free here and what gives you the right to take away someone’s life? It’s not fair.”
