Jail documents reveal details of Danny Heinrich's life behind bars

- New details have emerged about Jacob Wetterling’s confessed killer, Danny Heinrich, and it’s coming from the people who have been closest to him for the past year -- the jail guards.

Heinrich has become a kind of horrific enigma. The head of the Minneapolis FBI has described him as petty with a mean streak. At the Sherburne County Jail, they know the 53-year-old as one of their most high-profile, and highly-combustible inmates.   That’s the reason federal prosecutors had to move fast when Danny Heinrich was suddenly willing to talk about what he did to Jacob Wetterling. They knew he could change his mind in a heartbeat.

“From everything we knew, Danny Heinrich was an angry and volatile man, who wanted to talk one minute and clam up the next,” U.S. Attorney Andy Luger said at the news conference announcing the confession.

Much of that personality profile comes from the year Heinrich has spent in the Sherburne County Jail, awaiting trial on federal pornography charges, with jailers listening in on Heinrich's phone calls.

The Fox 9 Investigators made a public records request for his time spent at the Sherburne jail. Some of it is quite mundane, like a strip search for a missing spork from the breakfast trays, and a tearful and distraught phone call from Heinrich's brother.

But there's also a telling indication of Heinrich's hot head. In June, Heinrich got into trouble with his fellow inmates. Heinrich was upset, yelling, and swearing.

"They are two faced mother-------,"  he told the jailer, saying all of the inmates talk behind his back, and talking about his high-profile case to their attorneys. But it was Heinrich who got in trouble. He was put on lockdown for 5 days.

Danny Heinrich is scheduled to be sentenced in two months. As part of a universal deal,  he's pleading to one count of possessing child pornography, which carries a 20-year sentence, and will not be charged with Jacob Wetterling's murder.
