Icing Smiles brings sweetness to families going through trying times

"We tried to bring Disney World to her room," her aunt, Joslynn Billington, says.

When they did just that in her room at Children's Hospital, a non-profit called Icing Smiles supplied a fantastic custom-made cake.

Cake artist Mary Frechette says, "Even under the best circumstances, cake brightens your day."

Frechette designed Denijah's cake. She says it was especially hard.

"Denijah was my first child who got her angel wings," Mary said.

Denijah passed away last March.

Denijah's family is so thankful for all the help they received at the Ronald McDonald house at Children's Hospital that they recently returned to serve dinner to other families going through tough medical ordeals.

"Instead of focusing on grief, we are focusing on gratitude," Joslynn says.

And they are celebrating. The night we visited would've been Denijah's sixth birthday. Yes, there was cake.

Icing Smiles is a national organization. Denijah's family is hosting a roller skating fundraiser for it on March 14 at Skateville in Burnsville.
