Herd of bison released for study in Afton, Minn.

It was a special and action packed weekend for the Belwin Conservancy in Afton, Minn. The nonprofit organization that owns 1,400 acres of preserved land welcomed 40 bison that will be spending the summer grazing on their land.

“This is the largest number we’ve ever had inside this 130 acres,” Belwin Conservancy executive director Nancy Kafka said.

Kafka hopes to study the bison’s grazing habits and how they interact with the prairie land they once called home before excessive hunting pushed them from many parts of the United States.

On Saturday, the 40 bison arrived in trailers and were released. The small herd will remain in Minnesota through the summer before returning to Wisconsin.
