Heavy rain, flash flooding possible Wednesday and Thursday

- A near perfect combination of heat and copious amounts of moisture will bring back the potential for widespread heavy rain, flash flooding, and other severe weather.  Every single level of the atmosphere will be water logged from Wednesday through Thursday night which could bring several rounds of torrential rains to parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin.  While the exact location and amounts are impossible to know ahead of time, the ingredients are certainly coming together for many of us to get more than 2 inches of rain… and SOME of us to get more than 6”.

The jet stream, that river of air at the top levels of the atmosphere, dips down into the desert southwest and then pushes northeast straight into Minnesota.  This river of air will actually pick up mid and upper level moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Javier and transport it straight to Minnesota, saturating the top half of the atmosphere. 

Meanwhile, at the lower levels of the atmosphere are coming out of nearly every southern direction, converging on the state.  This not only brings the low level moisture from Monsoon season in the Desert, but brings in plenty of Gulf of Mexico moisture as well.  This is why it felt so steamy on Tuesday.  Combine both sources together, and you have managed to saturate the entire atmosphere, setting the stage for some very heavy rain.

At the moment, it looks like much of the 94 corridor, including the metro, could get widespread rainfall amounts of 2 to 5 inches.  However, if storms move over the same areas consistently, what us meteorologists call training, or the rain hangs around longer than expected, so isolated amounts of 7 or 8 inches are not out of the question.  This amount of rain could cause some major flooding issues, especially since this summer has been so wet in so many areas.  Stay tuned for the very latest and remember, turn around, don’t drown.
