Grumpy's Bar & Grill to shutter downtown location this fall

Grumpy's Bar & Grill will be closing its downtown Minneapolis location, a 20-year-plus run that's set to end with reports that the site is likely going to be developed into a mixed use apartment/retail building.

The popular dive bar announced it would close later this fall in a Facebook post Tuesday morning and called the decision a death by "a thousand paper cuts."

Management cited demographic shifts and changing tastes in the downtown area as key drivers in their decision to shutter Grumpy's, noting the bar has struggled with declining sales numbers in recent years just as property taxes rose and more upscale options moved into the neighborhood.

The company's northeast Minneapolis and Roseville locations will remain open, with many staff members from the downtown location taking on roles at one of those two bars.

"We’re throwing in the towel and yes it hurts," the Facebook post reads. "It’s been a great run, and to all of you who supported us, we can’t thank you enough."
